Resources on the NADA Website. A link to “ATAE Resources” is located on the main page of the NADA website under the “State & Metros” tab. This link provides password-protected access to, among other things, the NADA Compilation of State Franchise Laws and the State Legal Affairs Monitor. In addition, the NADA website contains a separate page dedicated to federal regulatory developments. Contact Regulatory Affairs for specific questions.

Amendments from the most recent legislative year are highlighted through underlining to identify new issues and/or trends. Key contacts are Jim Moors at jmoors@nada.org and Lauren Bailey at lbailey@nada.org.

State Legal Affairs Monitor. The Monitor reports on recent legislation developments and court decisions of interest to ATAEs, primarily in the franchise area. It is published 3-4 times a year, and the index of cases is updated annually.

Regulatory Review. This review reports on recent federal regulatory developments of interest to ATAEs. Agencies whose activities are reported on included EPA, OSHA, FTC, FRB, FCC, IRS, NHTSA, and the Treasury, Labor, Transportation, and Energy Departments. It is published 3-4 times a year.

Guides and Bulletins. The NADA Legal and Regulatory Affairs Group produces a number of guides and bulletins both to inform the NADA membership and ATAEs about important regulatory developments and to provide compliance guidance. Several of these publications are produced in conjunction with Management Education.

General Communication. In addition to the foregoing, the NADA Legal and Regulatory Group communicates with and provides information to the ATAEs in a wide variety of other ways. As appropriate, Legal and Regulatory personnel send memos directly to the ATAE body, submit articles for the ATAE newsletters, and distribute “60 - second emails” on topics of importance. More individualized information is provided through speakers for regulatory seminars and state conventions as well as in response to telephone and email inquiries. Community Relations. NADA works with ATAEs to promote community relations and safety at the local level. In addition to support for individual events, NADA organizes several annual national events including:

Child Passenger Safety Month. The National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) has designated September as Child Passenger Safety Month. New car dealers across the country host child safety seat inspections at their dealerships, as part of NADA's award winning, national "Boost for Safety" campaign, a program developed in partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).The September initiative coincides with the back-to-school timeframe, when many children are on the roads each day.

NADA has produced a how-to tool kit with step-by-step guidance on hosting a child seat event. NADA also offers free materials for use at your child safety seat event, including postcard-sized guides with instruction on all phases of child seat use (100-200 quantity), consumer brochures on proper booster seat use (100-200 quantity) and a video.

Tire Safety. In an effort to advance automotive safety, NADA and many ATAEs have joined the “Be Tire Smart – Play Your Part” national tire safety campaign, sponsored by the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA).

The campaign is designed to raise awareness among drivers about the importance of checking vehicle tire pressure and wear regularly. It also helps consumers to recognize the signs of tire safety problems while driving, such as shaking or pulling, which may require attention by a dealership or other tire retailer. RMA provides free tire safety kits, including consumer brochures, to you and/or your dealers.

Automotive Career Month. Dealers across the country will host career events for students in April as part of NADA's Automotive Career Month. Events include "behind-the-scenes" tours of new-car dealerships to see first-hand how the business works in all areas of its operation. Event resources include Take the Ride of Your Life!, a DVD geared to students that explains how an automotive career can be fun and well-paying. Take the Ride of Your Life! is ideal for use at career events or to present to schools and libraries in your area. In addition, a continuous-loop version of the main segment of the DVD is available for use at auto shows. Other event resources include posters, flyers, sample press releases and PSA scripts, sample letters to school principals, local media, etc., reproducible artwork, and draft proclamation requests.

Press Releases. NADA experts can review your association press releases for format and content, and can make suggestions for your media outreach strategy.

Awards Programs. Dealer awards help ATAEs raise awareness of the contributions their dealer members make to their communities. Presented at the annual NADA and ATD conventions, and the Washington Conference, dealers are recognized who exemplify the highest standards of professional and civic leadership. Nominations are made through state and local ATAE associations. Current awards include:

TIME Dealer of the Year. The TIME magazine Dealer of the Year Award is presented annually at the Saturday General Session of the NADA Convention & Exposition. The prestigious award recognizes outstanding new car dealers for exceptional performance in their dealership and distinguished community service. The award, sponsored by TIME magazine in association with Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, and in cooperation with NADA, celebrates 42 years in 2011. Dealers are nominated by either state or local associations of franchised new-car dealers, which are members of the Automotive Trade Association Executives. Finalists are chosen by a panel composed of faculty from the University of Michigan Graduate School of Business Administration. Once the judges have selected the TDOY finalists, they choose one TIME Dealer of the Year. In appreciation for this service, TIME and Goodyear have established an annual scholarship at the school in the name of TIME, The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, NADA and the TDOY nominees.

Truck Dealer of the Year. The Truck Dealer of the Year Award, cosponsored by The American Truck Dealers (ATD) and Heavy Duty Trucking magazine, recognizes excellence in business practices, industry leadership and contributions, and community leadership. Each year, the winner becomes a force in shaping the future of the industry, and serves as a spokesperson for dealers throughout the US. The Truck Dealer of the Year is selected by a team from the Indiana University Kelly School of Business, from a pool of candidates nominated by ATD officers and ATAEs. The award is presented annually during the opening ceremonies at the ATD Convention & Exposition.

NADA Century Award.
From blacksmiths to bicycle-shop owners, a notable group of America’s new-car dealer families have been in the transportation business for more than 100 years. The National Automobile Dealers Association celebrates these dedicated dealer families with the NADA Century Award. The award recognizes dealers for their involvement in providing jobs, new and used vehicles, repair services, and charitable giving to their local communities. The award is presented to Century Award dealers throughout the year. For more information, go to NADA Century Award.
